Jilla - release in January for Pongal

R.B. Choudhary is making his upcoming film Jilla which has him pairing up opposite Kajal Aggarwal.Mohanlal, the Malayalam megastar, plays a significant role in the film.

Nesan is the director of the film. Choudhary, meanwhile, has asked Nesan to ensure that the film doesn’t have any ‘punch’ dialogues which might upset the powers-that-be and which might also result in placing impediments as and when the film gets ready for its theatrical release.

It is said that Choudhary, who had watched the problems Vijay’s latest film Thalaivaa faced before it finally got to hit the screens on 20th August, doesn’t want a repetition of those events. Two weeks back Vijay was pushed to a corner with no support from inside the industry except from the DMK corner. The film finally got released in a middle of a week date with a very a poor response compared to a Vijay film opening. The first weekend too did not do much help due to the not so good word of mouth and easy availability of the pirated DVDs in the market. The film in all permutation will end up as a loss for the producer and distributor’s except for the UK and Malaysia distributors.

It seem now after going through the script, Choudhary has asked Nesan to delete all those politically-coloured ‘punch’ dialogues. He is said to have watched the portions which have been shot so far and recommended deletion of some portions which had the trademark punch dialogues of Vijay. “No political colour should be given to the films produced by me,” he is said to have made it clear to both Vijay and Nesan.

Vijay's Next Movie with AR Murugadoss

Vijay and A R Murugadoss alliance for the movie Thuppakki. This movie takes Vijay’s image forward in action thriller. Movie was a blockbuster in box office and filled in theatres with all classes of people.

Vijay signed up and busy with Thalaivaa and Jilla movies. After a big controversy, Thalaivaa is released and running successfully in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. Vijay is planning to alliance again with A R Murugadoss after Jilla release. The movie is planned to be taken in big budget and mass to satisfy his fans and general audience. The story seems to be focus on social issue without touching controversy matters.

Even though no official announcements about the movie, Vijay and A R Murugadoss seems to be decided the movie title. The movie title is going to be catchy than ever before.

Cheran's daughter is back to home!!

Director Cheran has been facing hard time personally for couple of months in dealing with his own daughter Damini who lodged a legal case against him for not accepting her relationship with Chandru. Well, the Madras High Court brought forth their verdict on the issue. Finally, Damini has decided to live with her parents after the counselling session with her headmistress PKK Pillai.

Thalaivaa Review & Release

In the opening credits, director A.L. Vijay pays tribute to these legends for inspiring him, but one wouldn't have guessed at this juncture that Thalaivaa would turn out to be a half baked product with some style.

The story is set in Mumbai, and it is about a local messiah of the masses played by Sathyaraj, while his son, played by Vijay, is living happily in Australia, unaware of the happenings back home. After introducing us to the short back story of Sathyaraj and his rise to power, the story shifts gears and takes us down under.

In Australia, Vijay is seen as a dancer and also the owner of a mineral water bottling plant. He falls in love with a fellow dancer essayed by Amala Paul, who joins his troupe, and all is well in their love story until Vijay returns to Mumbai.

Back home, circumstances force Vijay to rise to the occasion and become a leader. He steps in his dad's shoes and what follows forms the crux of the story.

We've seen and heard this story several times, haven't we? And yet Thalaivaa manages to impress momentarily, but where it fails is in engaging on the whole due to its extended screenplay, which clocks almost three hours.

Thalaivaa is mostly shot in Mumbai, where Vijay's Thuppaki was earlier filmed and there was definitely a feeling of deja vu. In both the films, Vijay comes to Mumbai, and happens to get himself involved in some kind of mission to save mankind.

Thalaivaa, like any other recent Tamil film, follows a tested pattern of storytelling. Make a highly entertaining first half that ends with a pre-interval bang, followed by a second half with a twist and lot of action. It's also one of those films where a common man rises up to the occasion to walk around with an entourage and eventually treated like a don.

The first half is packed with some good fun. Santhanam's comedy and the eye-capturing cinematography in Australia, laced with the chemistry between Vijay and Amala Paul, especially in one of the dance sequences, is something to watch out for. This is followed by a slow and stretched second half, which portrays Vijay in his 'mass avatar' written almost on every frame.

The film's biggest letdown is its dragged narration that never wants to end. And when it is finally about reach its end, we are tortured with an additional song. If only director Vijay had trimmed the film by a good half hour, Thalaivaa wouldn't have earned the wrath of the audiences as well critics.

Nirav Shah's cinematography is top-notch as he successfully translates the beauty of Australia on the big screen, while capturing the frenzied atmosphere of Mumbai to perfection. G.V. Prakash's work only gets notice in the background score as the songs only end up breaking the flow of the narrative.

The film opened with mixed to positive reviews from critics.

• Behindwoods.com gave the movie 2.75/5 commenting "Although slow at the start and missing in some of its character backstories, the film makes up for it with few unexpected turns of events. It is not an overtly commercial film made for those who expect equal parts romance, comedy and action, but a more commercially lighter look at the ‘Godfather’ genre."
• Review Raja gave 8.13/10 for Thalaivaa.
• Entertainment One India gave the movie a 3/5.
• KollywoodToday.com gave 2.5/5 stating that the film can be watched one time.
• MovieCrow rated 2.5/5 stating that the movie could be watched only for the first half.
• Metromasti.com gave the movie a 3/5 stating "Thalaiva which runs for 185 minutes has very intelligent scenes and is expected to be a complete class hit entertainer movie of the year. Apherald.com gave 2/5 stating that the movie is only for diehard fans of Vijay.

• Thalaivaa distribution rights for the United States and Canada were bought by Bharat Creations.
• Ayngaran International acquired the overseas rights for Thalaivaa.
• Tamil Nadu rights were bought by Vendhar Movies and Kerala rights by Thameens via Vendhar movies.
• The film has been released on Friday, August 9 all over India and abroad except in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
• Thalaivaa is releasing on August 20 in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.
